{oom} impromptu picnics
Scorpius is done before her. He's always done before Annabeth.
(And usually he's sweating and feeling disgusting but also feeling good and she's just -
A bloody gorgeous demigod who can run laps around him. And he doesn't mind one bit.)
So he waves her off to continue on with her jog and he heads inside to grab two bottles of water and a picnic basket of things that Bar provides before meeting her by the lake.
(Because he tries to be a gentleman and a good kind-of-sort-of boyfriend - Though, they're the real deal now, aren't they? If anyone asked, he'd likely say she was his girlfriend. - and a picnic by the lake? Well, that's just what boyfriends do.)
He greets her again with a kiss to the cheek.
"I, uhm - Have no idea what she gave us in here, but Bar usually has good taste in food, right?"

She reaches for one of the bottles of water for re-hydration purposes, before offering to help with the picnic set up.
"At least in my experience. This was incredibly thoughtful of you, though."
Picnics out by the lake like this, with the boy she is currently dating.
Her ... well, boyfriend.
(Wow. She has a boyfriend.)

He'll give credit where it's due.
He spreads out a provided blanket on the ground, only straightening it out with a flick of his wand at the corners.
"Just, er, out of curiosity, what is your favourite food?"
For future thoughtful moments.
no subject
Annabeth bites her bottom lip in thought, half-watching Scorpius literally work his magic on the blanket.
That will never not be cool.
"You know, I don't think anyone's ever asked me that before." She laughs a little. "Kinda weird, huh? I mean, there's food I like to eat, but -"
She pauses.
"I guess my favourite food is hotdogs. Not because they particularly taste amazing or anything, but ... when I was a kid, my best friend Thalia and I had to eat them all the time while we were on the run. Some of my favourite memories are associated with hotdogs."
no subject
"I - Uhm, I don't think I know what hotdogs are."
But, he can only assume (and hope) she doesn't literally mean hot dogs.
He rubs the back of his neck.
"You were on the run?"
no subject
She smiles faintly, mostly amused by the expression on Scorpius' face.
"Hotdogs, by the way, are basically sausages in buns. They're a lot like hamburgers, only without the flat meat patty. Back home, there are hotdog vendors everywhere; that's where we used to get them."
no subject
Not that she needs help sitting, but -
Maybe he just wants to hold her hand?
"Why did you run away?"
And at seven years old? That's rather young.
('Course he's thought about it before, running away from home. He's just never actually done it before.)
no subject
"I don't know if I've told you before, but demigods are kind of magnets for monsters. Anyway - I didn't want to be in a place like that, so I ran away."
She lets out a breath.
"At the time, I didn't think my dad cared either."
no subject
Monsters and Titan wars, as she's mentioned. A whole part of her life he hasn't experienced yet.
"And now you're at the camp. Have you, er - Have you gone back at all? To your dad and your step-family. Or talked to them?"
no subject
Monsters and Titan wars are nothing to get excited over.
"Yeah," Annabeth says. "I tried a couple times. It went horribly the first time I tried to go back a long time ago.
"It was better the last time I saw my dad, when I was with Percy and Thalia. That was - gods, it was only last year."
My, how time flies.
"We actually got along, and everything seemed ... it seemed cool."
She shakes her head and smiles.
"But this is not the kind of stuff we should be talking about on a picnic, is it? It's kind of depressing."
no subject
He shrugs, giving her a warm smile.
He won't force her to talk about it.
no subject
She's more or less made her peace with this.
"What about you? What's your family like?"
no subject
His family?
"Hm, well, uhm. It's only my parents and I? I don't have any siblings. And they're, er - I don't know," he says, puffing out his cheeks as he pushes out a breath. "They're my parents. We're on good terms. Mostly. I, er, don't always know what they expect of me, but that's - That's how it is."
no subject
"Yeah, I think that's pretty common: not knowing what your parents expect of you. Honestly, I don't think most parents know what they expect of their kids either.
"And you're, like, close to graduating from Hogwarts, aren't you?"
no subject
And, aside from possibly owning and having a home to care for before then, he hasn't a clue of what to do after Hogwarts.
no subject
"Do you know what you're going to do when you graduate? What would wizards usually do?"
no subject
Not everyone does, obviously, but Scorpius thinks most do.
"Mostly low-level positions or apprenticeships. Though, if you know someone -
Well. My mate, Rigel? He wants to work with the Wizengamot. Er, that is, our courts. He actually wants to be the Chief Warlock, but he's got a long way to climb. Not that I don't think he could do it. He knows the right people and he's got the mind for it.
"Anyway, he'll be working a few hours this summer because he's already set up with the department at the Ministry. Nothing serious, mostly a 'glorified errand boy', he says."
He shrugs, scratching at his jaw. Rigel will likely have a seat by the time he's twenty with his Slytherin ambition.
"I haven't a clue what I want to do. Is it just the camp for you?" he asks, suddenly, hardly taking a breath between his confession and the question.
no subject
Now that the question has come back to her, she starts to reach for the picnic basket, opening the lid as she formulates her words.
"Well, honestly? This is another kind of depressing thought, but ... demigods don't generally think about stuff like that. I mean, not seriously, anyway.
"We don't have very long lifespans, when you think about the monsters constantly on our tails, you know?"
She shrugs.
"Otherwise ... I mean, if we do live long enough to finish high school, it's just normal stuff for us. Jobs, too. Or careers. And if we're really lucky, then families."
no subject
That is depressing. And he can't imagine how she does it. She seems to hold it together very well, thinking about it or not thinking about it all.
(It certainly makes him think about the Wizarding Wars some, and what it was like for anyone during that time.)
"I have half a mind to buy an entire crate of Felix Felicis for you," he admits, frowning. "Liquid luck."
no subject
"That's sweet," she says, smiling a little. "But I'll be fine. We all will. We were brought up to understand the reality of being a demigod, you know?"
She isn't afraid to die, if it comes to it.
In fact, it's probably the best way to go.
(Not that she'll tell Scorpius all of this or anything.)
"Anyway, it makes you really appreciate living in the moment."
She glances at him, grinning.
no subject
It still sucks.
And -
How would he ever know if something happens to her?
He grins back, a little on the weak side, then gives her a quick kiss. Appreciating and living in the moment and all.
"So, uhm. Tell me about your friends at camp?"
no subject
"Well, I've told you a little bit about Percy," she starts, suddenly feeling just a little weird bout of guilt at the mention of his name.
It's - well, it's probably nothing.
She finds Scorpius' hand and takes hold of it, winding her fingers through his.
"He's a son of Poseidon, so technically he and I weren't supposed to get along. Poseidon and my mom have been at odds with each other for quite some time."
She shrugs.
"There's also Grover and - well, before he left, there was Nico. I guess most of my closest friends have left Camp for some reason or another. Like Thalia. And Luke."
no subject
He remembers her being pissed off about that. But, mostly he remembers that being the night he asked her out.
"Luke was the other one you ran away with?"
He can't remember her mentioning him, other than that.
no subject
She smiles.
It's a little sad.
"He's ... working with the Titans now. I think he's just confused about it because he's so angry at the gods. But everyone else, besides Thalia, has pretty much condemned him."
no subject
"Why is he so angry at the gods?"
no subject
It might sound harsh, but it's the truth.
"They have this stupid rule where they're not allowed to get involved in the affairs of their kids. So there are all these demigods running around without a mom or a dad. A lot of them don't even know they're demigods - not until a seeker, like my friend Grover, goes out and finds them and brings them somewhere safe."
She shrugs.
"The thing is, the gods say they can't interfere, but history shows that they do. It's just that they do it whenever they want to. So, to me -" She glances up at the sky, vaguely wary "- it almost feels like they're just trying to shirk their responsibilities as parents, you know?
"And clearly Luke couldn't accept that."
